Unit 9 - Real Vs Unreal

The real versus unreal plays a major role in today’s historical experience. Historical accounts have been greatly impacted by the development of new virtual study and recreation techniques. However, there are pros and cons of handling historical objects physically and virtually. These pros and cons consist of historical knowledge of an object, the time needed to study objects and the sensory interaction with these objects.  The advancement of Technology has created many possibilities that weren't available in the past.  Today's devices allow historians to restore and perform tasks on objects that might have previously been very time consuming physically. Also, when compared to the method of physically handling an object, some of these tasks ran the risk of potentially harming the objects.  With the aid of 3D imaging , archaeologists are able to perform analysis and access related findings from anywhere in the world. Notes are often attached to describe texture and sme...

Unit 8

My digital history project will involve creating a website via Pinterest or a web creation tool that will compare storing historical content on the internet versus in a museum. I will analyze how they both obtain their content and discuss in detail the steps taken to gain permission to display the objects. I will also describe the punishment for displaying content on the internet without the permission of the museum. The website will give a timeline of museums and history websites so we can predict their trending direction. A section dedicated to the first museum will give users an understanding of its creation and some of the challenges it faced such as advertising and obtaining objects. There will be links provided to several museums that allow their content to be displayed on the internet. The mission of the website is to be a one-stop shop for users to search for museums that allow their content to be displayed on the internet. Arlington Public library offers a variet...

The Smithsonian African American museum opened its doors on September 24, 2016. It is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. The museum has state of the art exhibits to display its collection of more than 36,000 artifacts. Locals in the District-Maryland-Virginia area and tourist have made getting a ticket to visit the museum a hot commodity. Tickets are free and available to the public on the Smithsonian website. Visitors with normal entry pass are not permitted to take pictures or videos of the museum’s exhibitions. They must complete a media request to obtain permission for non-commercial photography or filmmaking. The Smithsonian museum collection is also available online. The content is organized by topic, date/era, name, object, type, and place. They also offer a search bar to help users narrow down their search. Each collection piece has an image along with a detailed description. The website allows u...

Unit 5 - Copyright Protection

Image
An author work is under copyright protection from the moment it is created. Some people send a copy of their own work to themselves in hopes to legally protect it. This is not a substitute for registering the work with the United States Copyright Registration. Once an author pays the fee to have their work protected they are able to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work to those using their work without permission. Their work is also protected with most countries throughout the world because of the United States copyright relations with them. According to Copyright law, it gives creators of media the exclusive rights to copy, distribute, and mash up the things they create for a limited time. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 Public domain are facts – whether scientific, historical, biographical or news of the day that copyright does not protect. Anyone is free to use the information included in a book about how pregnancy works or a television document...

Unit 4 - Style the Web

Image
In the past, the only way to build a website was with HTML coding. Users would simply need a text editor to write HTML and CSS files. Applying style to newly created website will require users to input separate codes for pictures, background color, text color, links, images and so forth. This form of website creation is very time consuming and also free. Websites like W3 school has a database of HTML codes and tutorials on how to properly apply the codes. There are several website creation tools available on the market that allows users to bypass the HTML coding process. These creation tools often have several premade templates that can be customized. Uploading personal images or content is made easy with a click and drag feature. Unlike HTML coding, website creation tools require users to purchase a subscription with them to publish their website to the internet. I have experience using HTML coding and using Wix to create a website.  Link to my website . Lis...

Unit 2, Part A

There were many topics that sparked my interest while reading, Digital History by Daniel J Cohen and Roy Rosenzweig. The chapter “Becoming Digital”, describes the delivery and management of digitized audio and moving image materials.  In my 28 years, I was able to experience the tail end of rewinding a cassette tape with a pen; then being introduced to the skip button on a CD player. In today’s age, audio can be stored in the Cloud.  I believe the words “digital” and “history” do not belong in the same sentence because technology is always evolving. One of my interest is to timeline the evolution of moving images on Pinterest.
