Unit 14 - GIS maps and Timelines

There are two useful software tools for documenting and managing historical data. They are the timeline and geographic information system (GIS). These respective software presentation illustrate different aspects of historical content. Timelines are linear organizers that help users to understand and illustrate the passage of large blocks of time. the benefits of timelines allows individuals to investigate events on a historical continuum. It also assist individuals with the study of the evolution of a social and/ or cultural phenomenon. Timelines are excellent visual tools used to recognize "cause and effect relationships between events." The internet offers several timeline creation tools designed specifically for certain types of users and/ or content. Each creation tool has its pros and cons that set them apart from one another. Unit 13 - Crowd sourcing

Internet users are social and they use various media platforms to give input about many subjects. Individuals are able to obtain information about a task or project by enlisting the services of a large number of people, either paid or unpaid. Crowd sourcing is powered by new technologies, social media and web 2.0. The growing connectivity makes it possible for individuals to collectively contribute to a project or cause.  The subject matter for the crowd sourcing can vary from health,  politic, travel and numerous other subject matter.  Crowd sourcing is a tool marketers or start up businesses use to generate funds or service. Unit 12 - Data Visualization

Data visualization is the presentation of data in a pictorial or graphical format. It enables users to see analytics presented visually. With interactive visualization, you can use technology that offers more detail with charts and graphs. Which allows users to identify areas that need attention or improvement. Data Visualization Tools Below is an update on the status of my data collection project . Currently, I'm still in the beginning stage of canvassing Old Town Alexandria VA for historical buildings. With the aid of a Google search, I have been able to locate several historical buildings. In addition, I have created an Omeka account to begin uploading photos. Lastly, I designed the page to be visually appealing and easy to navigate. Unit 10 - Digital Archive

A digital archive stores a collection of digital materials for historical researchers. Archivists collect the records of people and organizations to provide sources for exploring and interpreting our history. These materials come in all formats from written manuscripts to digitally created content. A digital archive catalogs information and material about a specific topic, geographical location and so forth.  They also preserve materials that are intangible; which will never decay or suffer wear and tear unlike those materials stored in physical library structures. The purpose of a digital archive is similar to a library. Teachers, students, historians and others research material to gain knowledge about certain subjects. The content of a digital archive is required to be organized, up to date, easy to navigate, with tons of material in order to cross-reference and links to source data.
