Unit 14 - GIS maps and Timelines

There are two useful software tools for documenting and managing historical data. They are the timeline and geographic information system (GIS). These respective software presentation illustrate different aspects of historical content. Timelines are linear organizers that help users to understand and illustrate the passage of large blocks of time. the benefits of timelines allows individuals to investigate events on a historical continuum. It also assist individuals with the study of the evolution of a social and/ or cultural phenomenon. Timelines are excellent visual tools used to recognize "cause and effect relationships between events." The internet offers several timeline creation tools designed specifically for certain types of users and/ or content. Each creation tool has its pros and cons that set them apart from one another. For example, Sutori is software that specializes in presentations for classroom in a unique timeline format. They allow users to combine images with text in organized sequence.

A geographic information system (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. It is a tool that analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes. GIS allows its creators to display information with a interactive map that gives users an idea of citizens way of life. They are a shareable application that users can virtually access anywhere with a digital device.

A digital timeline and GIS map are both great tools for creators to turn raw data about history into useful information. They must effectively collect the data and warehouse it digitally. GIS ap creation tool is time-consuming and requires a higher learning curve than the timeline.

  1. Good point about the two different tools, one for time, one for geography. Hadn't thought of it that way before. And you are also write that the GIS tools are still i their infancy and require ramping up a high learning curve,
